Honorary doctorate degrees constitute the highest academic honour and are conferred to distinguished Greek or foreign scientists, who have produced significant scientific work or have offered valuable services to society.

The nomination of Prof. George Tchobanoglous for the award of an honorary doctorate degree for his outstanding Contributions to the field of Environmental Science and his valuable services to the Technical University of Crete, received a unanimous vote by the General Assembly of the School of Environmental Engineering of the Technical University of Crete. 

In his acceptance speech, Prof. George Tchobanoglous thanked the Technical University of Crete and the Rector for the award and the honour bestowed upon him and gave a lecture to an audience of members of the academic community of the Technical University of Crete.
